So, you are all revved up for the 2017 decorating season. You know the trends, you’ve got your color palette all picked out, you know the Colors of the Year, possibly because you’ve perused these helpful guides. So where do you go from here? How do you implement these myriad great different styles? Especially if you aren’t so sure you want to do something as permanent as replacing your carpet, or as semi-permanent as, say, painting a wall. Going forward, there are a lot of cool and fairly simple ways to incorporate this upcoming year’s trendy colors into your decor.
Shop Jennifer Taylor Sofas and Sectionals:
Starting off strong with one of the most important pieces of furniture in your home. I know I’m probably not alone in jumping straight to ‘sofa‘ when I think about possible changes to your decor. Obviously buying a sofa is not something to be entered into lightly, but if you’re looking to switch or upgrade, the shadow palette is a great one to go with. Honestly, I love grey sofas. They’re classy and versatile without being as intensely light-sucking as a black sofa, and they are much less prone to staining than a white sofa. In fact, they’re one of the best choices if you expect them to get a lot of wear and tear.
Shop Lighting Wall Sconces:
The best thing about the shadow theme is that it’s an aesthetic more than a color, with a moody, dreamy quality. That means that certain accents can match even if they don’t exactly fit in with the color aspect. Worked metal fits the romance and mystery of the shadow palette, and so do unique or interesting light fixtures, considering that the source of shadow is light. And if you’re going for fascinating shadows, there’s honestly no better light source than candles or flames.
Shop Accent Chairs:
Not ready to commit to a couch? Accent furniture is perfect for fitting to a specific theme (especially one with a built in time constraint like color of the year) since it tends to be cheaper than a full living room set, and also tends to be lighter and easier to move around. I like the subtle grey/silver of this particular chair, but there are all sorts of different shades. I know I keep singing the praises of this palette, but shadow is so versatile, honestly. Benjamin-Moore’s stated colors aren’t just sheer grays and smoky violets, either. There’s everything from burgundy, to deep avocado greens, to grays that to be honest look pretty darn blue to me. And depending on the light in the room you are looking to decorate, customizing to fit your theme can be simple.
Maybe you want to give your eyeballs a break from the shadow palette, or maybe you’re just sick of shades of grey. There’s many different choices you can make that still sneak in under the radar, but also open up a whole different kind of hue. Like I said, one Benjamin-Moore’s listed colors is “avocado green”. So you could easily find something to fit both colors of the year–shadow, and Pantone’s official color of the year–greenery. Nothing like killing two trend birds with one neat little stone.
These are really just a jumping off point for trying to make some trendy choices in the next year. I promise I won’t spend the rest of forever singing the praises of grey and Benjamin Moore, but I thought I would give this cool idea its due reverence. It’s always a delight to find an “official” trend that I am 100% behind.
