Five Simple And Affordable Ways To Add Color To Your Living Room

I’ve spoken a little bit before about infusing a kitchen with bright, vibrant color. Many of the same rules apply when doing the same for a living room, but often the process is much easier. Where kitchens are primarily composed of permanent fixtures, living spaces are full of furniture and decor that are easily changed, moved, or replaced. If you’re looking for a fast and easy way to add a wow factor to your living room, we’ve got five simple, affordable ways to do it with color.

For most people (I’m excluding any die-hard color lovers, who would probably scoff at this advice) it’s almost always wise to start with a rather neutral baseline living room decor. Neutral carpets and wood flooring hide dirt and can make a living space look larger, while major purchases like a sofa should be neutral enough in color that they can easily blend with a changing space. Black, white, or any shade of beige or even gray will work. In this simple, stylish black-on-gray living room, the small green and red decor items and botanicals, as well as the LED living print on the wall all stand out beautifully, giving what could be a slightly dull space a more vibrant appearance.

As well, in an overall neutral decor, adding a single bold, colorful piece of accent furniture will stand out like an exclamation mark. Personally, I find a single fire engine red accent to be the most stunning and vivacious, but any color will work. This bold yellow arc lamp and accent table are extremely vivid against the white on white decor, and completely change the way you see the space, infusing it with a little life. The best part? You don’t need to replace any of your major furniture.

Accent chairs, while a little more expensive (and taking up a little more floor space) are another great way to add a splash of color to your living room. A single piece of furniture won’t overwhelm the space, even if you opt for a very bold color or funky pattern. For color lovers, mixing and matching furniture (or cushions, pillows, or slipcovers) in different shades or patterns of the same color is a great way to create a coordinated, unified decor that puts color front and center. But even a single chair with the right accessories can do the same in a simpler, more neutral decor.

Perhaps one of the simplest ways to add color to a living space is to paint one or more of the walls. I’m a big fan of accent walls, which are easier to paint and easier to change up more often than if you paint the full room, but a simple coat or two of paint in a trendy color is maybe the most tried and true way to update a living room. For added impact, choose a bold color and accessorize with a contrasting color – either in the wall art, decor, throw pillows, or even fresh flowers.

You can even use the view from your living room window to help add color to your interior space. In addition to a beautiful cityscape, this posh modern loft also has peeks of green trees that are echoed in the table top botanicals. The white walls keep the space bright, while the neutral floor lends a natural touch. The simple greenery decorating the table ties the blue skyline and wood floors together to soften the starkly modern furniture, giving the room a breezy, earthy feel that gives the impression of a lot more color than is actually there.
